10 Summer Activities Your Dog Will Love

Hot dog! Memorial Day is the official kickoff to summer! You want to try out some summer activities your dog will love? Let’s face it, our dogs enjoy nothing more than having us around. This summer is a time to include your dog in some new activities, and try some new things. Want to help make your dog STOKED? Check out this list!

1. Take Your Dog to the Beach

Obviously, for some this is tricky. If you live in an area near water, with dog friendly beaches go for it! Better yet, if you live in an area where you can access quieter, off-the-beaten path beaches this may be a better way to introduce your dog to the wonders of the beach.

We’re fortunate to live somewhere close to lots of Lake MI beaches. Oliver approves.

2. A Rousting Game of Fetch

While you’re at the beach, a game of fetch or Chuk-it is a must (provided your dog is a water dog). To begin, swimming is an amazing, low impact activity. Plus, if you have a high-energy dog, this is just the way to wear them out. Of course, always watch your dog for signs of fatigue and end the game if needed. Anyone who knows a high energy dog knows they won’t end the fetch game themselves! Finally, always make sure your dog has plenty of fresh water to stay hydrated.

Franklin LIVED for fetch. My current dogs, not so much.

3. Make Some Pupsicles

Pupsicles have become my new favorite dog treats! Generally speaking, they are easy to make. To begin, you control the ingredients, and your dog will most likely LOVE them! Plus, there’s nothing to help cool your pup down on a hot day like a healthy, frozen treat. Grab one of these recipes!

4. Take a Hike

Nothing makes your dog more stoked than seeing (and smelling) new places! Just think, your favoite person invites you on a car ride and you arrive at a magical wooded wonderland! Of course, always practice proper precautions in regards to leashing, and follow rules regarding where your Best Friend is allowed. Additionally, remember to check your dog and yourself for ticks. Finally, bring water for your Best Friend too!

We’re also lucky to live near lots of hiking areas!

5. Visit a Farmer’s Market

Many farmer’s markets are dog friendly. With this in mind, farm markets are a good way to help socialize your dog provided he is not overly reactive and enjoys being in active surroundings. Furtner, there’s a really good chance someone there will have treats (hopefully the homemade kind!) your Best Friend can sample if he’s not too busy taking in the scene.

I take photos my dog customers when I sell treats at the local market. It always burns me when my neighbor starts doling out Milk Bones before the dogs get to my display and MUCH better samples!

6. Go Camping

Your dog is happiest when he’s with you! We all know, most dogs are also happiest on outdoor adventures! Camping with your dog gets him out for exercise, enrichment outside of the house, and quality time with your family. Better yet, what’s more adventurous than spending the night in a tent with a wet dog! OK, kidding there. However, it IS fun having your dog along on camping trips, especially those that are in off-the-beaten path campgrounds where you can both enjoy some freedom and space.

7. Throw a Pool Party

What’s more exciting than a romp in the pool? All you need for this is a kiddie pool, a hose, and some tennis balls! With this in mind, think of your dog’s delight when you fill up his OWN personal pool and throw a party just for him! Of course, you could even up the fun level and throw in a good (gentle) hosing or some squirt gun action for a game your Best Friend is sure to love! What? Your dog doesn’t love water? No worries! Coincidentally, the pool is a relaxing place to quench his thirst and dip his delicate paws for a brief cool down. Just be sure to provide lots of shade.

8. Bring Your Dog to the Library Errr… Help Your Dog Become the Library!

Have you always wanted to utilize your dog’s skills as a service dog? Why not set up a neighborhood doggie reading hour with your children and their friends to help hone in their reading skills. For example, research says that children actually DO improve skills when reading to a furry, nonjudgemental friend. Check out the Five Minute Librarian for programs where you can even get your dog signed up as a Bona Fide, official library dog!

9. Learn a New Trick or Take a Class Together

Check out your local SPCA for agility, flyball, or scentwork classes. Or, check out DIY courses on udemy.com. As a matter of fact, your dog will be overjoyed to learn something new with you, and working through a course together is a fantastic bonding experience!

10. Enjoy a “Pup-nic” Together

Chances are, there are some restaurants in your area that allow and even encourage dogs. Take in the sights and smells at the outdoor patio. Enjoy a beer while your Best Friend munches brunch. Heck, you could even schedule a doggie date with some friends and their pooches. Make it an event! If that sounds too crazy, pack up a picnic and enjoy some time in the (dog friendly) park together.

Just Remember…

While your dog loves and adores being with you, you know what’s best for him or her. Sometimes, if it’s too hot, it’s simply a better idea to leave your Best Friend at home where it’s safest. Your dog should never come along if it means she’ll have to spend any time in a hot car or get overheated in the sun.

What activities are you planning with your Best Friend this summer?
